The charming Franciscan Garden (Františkánská zahrada) finds itself tucked between Jungmannovo Square, Wenceslas Square, Vodičkova and Palackého streets in the heart of the New Town. It is a lovely setting right next to the Church of Virgin Mary of the Snows, and a welcome oasis of calm in the middle of the bustling city center. The garden offers a pleasant alternate route between Jungmannovo náměstí/Národní třída and Wenceslas Square.

The area already served as a garden in the 14th century when the New Town was being built. It was completely restored in the early 1990s and now serves as a public garden with benches, trees and lots of rose bushes. It is open daily from 7 or 8 a.m. to 7, 8 or 10 p.m., depending on the time of year.

Getting There

The garden has several entrances: directly from Jungmannovo náměstí, through Pasáž Světozor from Vodičkova Street, or through a passage from Wenceslas Square (near Vodičkova).

What to Do in the Franciscan Garden

As mentioned above, Franciscan Garden is a great connector between Jungmannovo and Wenceslas Square, which is a good enough reason to come here. The garden is not very large and it is mainly designed for relaxation. You can sit on one of its many benches, eat ice cream that you bought in the adjoining Pasáž Světozor and watch people. There is also a small children's playground with a sand box and swings.
