Czech Puppets and Marionettes
The art of Czech
marionette and puppet making goes back to the 18th century.
They are traditionally handcarved from wood or made from
plaster. They represent all kinds of characters from
devils, witches and wizards to clowns, kings and princesses,
and even Czech "celebrities" such as Spejbl, Hurvínek,
or the Czech literary character of Švejk. Many of these beautiful,
elaborately carved Czech marionettes are works of art.
You will find many stores
in Prague that sell Czech marionettes and puppets made by
Czech artisans. Below are some of Prague's best puppet
shops.

puppet shop on
the top of Nerudova Street in Lesser Town. Two other locations
are at Jilská 7 and Jilská 22 in the Old Town, not far
from the Old Town Square.

U lužického semináře Street near Charles Bridge present
a large selection of high quality puppets and marionettes
made by some of the best professional Czech artisans. The
Galerie Marionette offers some exquisite, pricey pieces
that would be best appreciated by collectors and art lovers.

This is a cute little puppet and
marionette shop located in one of the little houses on
Golden Lane. Original Czech wooden
toys are sold in the other room. This is a great stop to
make with your kids when visiting the Prague Castle.
